Bulgaria celebrates its Liberation Day

Bulgaria celebrates on March 3rd the country's National Holiday, marking the 133rd anniversary of its Liberation from five centuries of Ottoman dominance.

Bulgaria’s nationhood was established back in the early 7th century (A.D.) when the first Bulgarian Empire began at around 632 and 681 A.D lasting until 1018 covering most of the Balkans, a geopolitical region in Southern Europe. Bulgarians had their own government, and distinct culture, education, literature, arts, religion and economic way of life before the Turks came in. The Slavic people consider Bulgaria as the centre of European culture and arts before the Ottoman Empire colonized the region.

The Ottoman Empire occupied Bulgaria from the latter half of the 14th century (or 15th century in some literature) until the end of Russo-Turkish War in 1877-1878 taking advantage of the decline in power of the Second Bulgarian Empire between 1185 and 1396/1422. Right after the Russo-Turkish War, Bulgaria saw the opportunity to re-establish its Third Bulgarian Empire and founded a new era of constitutional monarchy in 1878 as supported by the Treaty of San Stefano.

MEETING IN THE UK

Last Sunday – on 13^th February 2011 – we came back from our trip in England. We stayed in a beautiful and probably the most multicultural city we’ve ever seen – Leicester. Our hotel with great care and tasty meals was one of the biggest pluses for us. We can say that we liked almost everything about England. We were mesmerized by its beauty, the style the houses were built in, the friendly people, of course and we quickly fell in love with the “beautiful” English weather. English coordinator and the main initiator – Pauline – showed us their beautiful city including monuments and schools, which we liked very much (we wish our schools looked like them). We loved the children from the Sacred Heart Primary School who were adorable and talkative. It was nice to see those cute children speaking and singing about our countries.

The last day trip to York with its noisy, but funny and nice guide was unfortunately a little annoying for us, because of our sickness. After four days in this beautiful foreign country, filled with interesting programme and exciting adventures – a trip to York, a disco, we finally arrived home. England, Leicester and the people we had met left a huge impression on us and we can say that we will never forget this experience.
