WARSAW - THE CAPITAL OF POLAND

One of the best known songs about our city is entitled "A dream of Warsaw" in which Czesław Niemen is singing: " I have , the same as you, my city and there is my the most beautiful world, there are the most beautiful days.... "

Warsaw was built on the banks of the Vistula River and has been the capital of Poland since king Zygmunt III transferred the capital of Poland from Cracow in the late 16th century.
Before the World War II the city was called "Paris of the North". Unfortunately, during the war it was almost completely destroyed.
Now Warsaw combines the influences of Western and Eastern Europe and it has its distinctive atmosphere. A lot of historical palaces, buildings and architecture complexes destroyed during World War II, were reconstructed and there are plenty attractions for tourists.
One of them is Warsaw's Old Town where in the middle of Market Square stands the Warsaw mermaid monument. The mermaid is a symbol of our city. Also in the Old Town there is Zygmunt's Column by which this king is remembered for moving the Capital from Cracow. The column is one of Europe's oldest secular monuments.
In the Old Town you can see the Royal Castle where the Royal Route starts. The truth is that the most of the monuments and historical places to see in Warsaw are situated here.
The Royal Route ends in Wilanów where there is the Wilanów Palace, a summer residence of Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland during the period 1674 - 1696. Wilanów takes the name from Italian "villa nuova" and was built at the end of the XVII century by an Italian architect Agostino Lotti.
Visiting Warsaw you must see Łazienki Park ( Baths Park ) which was designed in the 17th century in the baroque style and took its name from a bathing pavilon that was located there.
The most interesting structures in the Park are:
  • Palace on the water
  • Roman theatre
  • White House
  • Old Orangery
  • New Orangery
  • Egyptian temple
  • Water tower
  • Temple of Diana.
In 1926 the statue of Frydery Chopin was erected in Łazienki Park. Here Chopin concerts are held on Sundays.

One of the landmarks of Warsaw is the Palace of Culture and Science, a gift from Joseph Stalin to Poland. After 1989 there was a public discussion what to do with this unwanted present.
Now it's on the list of the cultural heritage and remains to be a tourist attraction with its 30th floor viewing platform.

There are more attractions in Warsaw and we encourage you to visit our city , especially when the weather is fine, when tired of sightseeing you can have a rest in an open terrace of one of the restaurants which have long and illustrious history.
We would like to say soon: " Welcome to Warsaw".

Traditionally each class prepares its own Christmas Eve the last day at school before Christmas holiday.

This year class II B has used the recipes we have received from you, dear partners.

All the dishes have been fantastic, the only problem which has appeared was the difficulty with obtaining the right shape of British mince pies. But nevertheless all the dishes tasted delicious.

We send you some photographs so that you could see some of them.
