Christmas in Poland

Dear Partners,

Christmas is over but we still admire the cards we received from you.

We all love the magic time of Christmas when we safeguard our tradition in a special way.

One of our students has faithfully rendered the atmosphere of this time in Poland in a short composition.

Why do I like Christmas?

I like Christmas, because this time is special. Christmas days are different from ordinary days. The air in my home smells like a wood because of Christmas Tree. I like moments when I decorate my tree with many colorful lights, glass bells and very old decorations made by me many years ago. Christmas is the time when we are together and we aren’t afraid of singing. Normally I don’t like singing, but when it’s Christmas I sing carols and Christmas songs all the time, so do my family. Our favourite carol is “Silent Night”. When I was a child, I remember, all Christmas Eves I had been waiting for Santa. I was always happy when I found presents. Christmas days are special also because of food. My grandmothers, mother and I prepare food for Christmas supper. We start the supper when the first star appears in the sky. We stand around a Christmas table and share a wafer with the whole family wishing each other Merry Christmas. Then we sit at the table and eat. Our traditional meal is carp, poppy seed cake, borscht with dumplings and dumplings with mushrooms and cabbage. After supper we talk, laugh and watch our presents. These moments are very nice and I like them very much. Days after Christmas Eve (December 25th and 26th) I spend with family and friends. We have big tasty dinner and go out somewhere very often after it.
